As soon I came out of the Audi theatre the first thing that struck my mind was that, this is a completely different level of Hindi Cinema we are experiencing. The acting, direction, cinematography (special mention) were all at a level which clearly portrayed the trajectory path that our Hindi Cinema is treading through and I am quite optimistic about Bollywood’s dominance in the world cinema. Have you ever imagined RAP music in Hindi cinema!! That’s the level of experimenting and exploration I am talking about.
Zoya Akhtar is a director who does not make movies for the mass. In fact I should not use the word “make”, she in fact creates, paints, illustrates a story on a big white 20-50 ft wide canvas called “the movie screen”. She isn’t bothered of the numbers, she does not aspire to be in the league of a 100-200 or 300 cr box office collection. Be it Luck By Chance, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara or for the matter of fact Dil Dhadakne Do she never stopped experimenting. In fact she aspires to make a movie which she is passionate about. And that’s precisely the crux of this movie Gully Boy; follow your dreams and constantly keep an eye on the opportunities.
This is a story based on Mumbai street rapper, beautifully blended into a romantic musical drama. Ranveer as Murad, a boy (chokra) from one of the by lanes (gullies) of the shady Dharavi area has done IMMENSE (in bold & capital) hard work in delivering this kind of performance which he simply makes it all look very easy and effortless. The scene where he as a driver is barred from entering a party and goes back to the car and sings his rap with aggression, when he stops his father from torturing his mother with solid attitude, when he stands in front of the mic for the first time being nervous and anxious or that fear of rawness and inexperience he depicts during his encounter with some rappers in an unofficial rap battle or be that spark with which he strikes a romantic chord with Alia; in all the scenes and many more the kind of intensity and maturity he has shown is really remarkable.
Alia is looking stunning wearing the hijab. Just like her role demands; she is chirpy, confident, chatty and also “Hateli” !! She is shown to be very possessive about her love Murad and does not get scared going violent or vocal. Siddhant as MC Sher has given a roaring performance. Hats off ! With the kind of confidence he has shared the screen with Ranveer talks in itself the kind of talent he is. In the movie he has been shown as the main support system, a buddy behind transforming Murad, the Dharavi chokra to the “Rapper Gully Boy”!!
The Rap lyrics are hard hitting with lot of depth and meaning. Songs Doori, Apna Time Aayega are simply superb. The rap battles have a lot of attitude and antagonizing element in it. The background score throughout the movie and the rap gets your head rocking constantly to the rhythmic beats of the numbers. Infact you come out of the theatre still rocking and with some additional hip hop body waves and finger signs.

Gaur kar lo meri baaton pe tum dhyan se
Bhago apne sapnon ke peeche tum junoon se
Na mumkin nahin kuch bhi yeh jaan lo
Har raaste ko cheerenge
Hum kaamyabi chheenenge
Kyon
Kyon ki Apna Time Aayega !!
